Rene Arredondo
Rene Arredondo was born on June 15th, 1961 in Apatzingan, Michoacan, Mexico. He is part of a list of legendary fi ghters from Mexico and was a fi erce and skilled fi ghter. He picked up boxing very fast as a kid and quickly compiled an impressive amateur record of 40-4. He made his professional boxing debut in 1979 in Vera Cruz, Mexico winning in a 2nd round TKO. At the beginning of his pro career he fought and defeated many opponents all bouts being held at venues in Mexico. With his undeniable skill, he took his talent to the United States and started his quest for greatness. In 1985, in one of the most important fi ghts in his career, Rene would face legendary fi ghter Rudolfo “El Gato” Gonzalez. The fi ght would go the distance with Arredondo losing in a very close 10 round split decision. This loss created a hunger in him that would only be fed by him increasing his training regimen and continuing his drive. He would train twice a day with extraordinary discipline and soon his chance at glory came again with a fi ght against a speedy Lonnie Smith for the WBC Welterweight Title. This time Arredondo’s skill and talent proved too much as he won by TKO in round 5. Rene Arredondo now stood as champion of the world. In his fi rst defense against Tsuyoshi Hamadr, Hamadr got the best of him. In 1987, in a rematch, Arredondo’s resilience and determination would reclaim him the WBC Light Welterweight crown. He would go onto lose the title but with his two WBC crownings, great skill, and resiliency, he has marked his claim as a true legend in boxing.
