Chango Carmona
Chango Carmona was born on September 29th, 1944 in Mexico City, Mexico. Chango Carmona began fighting as a pro at the age of twenty. While some fighters never get the chance at a title shot, Carmona needed only 28 fights to prove he was ready for the best as he won the Mexican National Lightweight title pushing him to the world stage. In 1968, after becoming the national champion, Chango began exporting his talents to the USA. His American debut was a slugfest that ended in the 4th round after Percy Hayles decided he could not go on to the 5th round. Chango would spend the next four years engaged in 25 fights all over Mexico, the Southwest U.S., and even Panama before getting his much deserved WBC Lightweight title shot. On September 15th, 1972, Chango picked apart lightweight king Mando Ramos at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California in front of Ramos’ hometown crowd. Chango put the champ on the ground in the fourth and again twice in the fifth. The fight was stopped in the 8th round after a barrage of Carmona blows. A champion was born. Carmona stepped in the ring six times over the next seven years, knocking out his last three opponents thus preserving his legacy as a true boxing great.
