Alberto Davila
Alberto Davila was born on August 10th, 1954 in the state of California. Davila began his career as a professional boxer in 1973. Alberto fought his way through his division before he was given his first title shot in 1978 against boxing great Carlos Zarate. It would take Davila five years and three title shots before he would capture the prestigious WBC crown from Francisco Bejines. The current WBC Champion, Pintor, suffered a car accident and had to retire involuntarily, leaving the crown vacant. The WBC assigned their number one challenger, undefeated Franciso “Kiko” Bejines, to box their number two challenger, Davila, for the title. Bejines held a slim lead on the judges' scorecards at the end of 11 rounds, and Davila, knew that round twelve was the last round of the bout and his last three minute opportunity to become a world champion. With 21 seconds to go, Bejines was knocked down. Davila became WBC Bantamweight Champion. Bejines suffered injuries and was hospitalized. Davila spent the best part of the next three days praying by the side of Bejines' family at the medical center. Bejines passed away. Davila announced his retirement after the fight. He upheld his contract and fought one more time winning by an 11 round TKO in the pouring rain. Alberto came out of retirement and fought 11 more times including two world championship fights. Alberto Davila is a hall of fame fighter with a hall of fame heart, a WBC Legend.
