Dr. Jose Sulaiman, the godfather of the WBC, has served as president for more than 30 years and continues to this day. He was unanimously elected in 1975 and has been instrumental in the creation of rules and regulations that have improved the conditions for fighters. Some of these contributions include lowering the amount of rounds from 15 to 12 which tends to the safety and welfare of fighters, the creation of the World Medical Congress, and funding of brain injury research at the University of UCLA. Mr. Sulaiman’s genuine concern for the fighters sets him far apart from many in this sport.
His love for boxing has been the central theme in his life. After an amateur career in boxing, and serving as trainer, promoter, referee, and judge, Sulaiman rose to the highest rank in a hurry. At the young age of 16 he was elected to the boxing commission in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. In 1968, he joined the WBC and seven quick years later he became the man they still call President. During his tenure, the WBC has sanctioned over 1,100 title fights and he has seen more than 300 fighters crowned as WBC Champions.
Dr. Sulaiman is also a prominent figure on a global level as he has had the privilege to meet and be in attendance with world leaders including Mayors, Congressman, Presidents and even Pope John Paul II.
Sulaiman has also brought the WBC to a global position. There are now 161 affiliated countries and 9 Continental Boxing Federations. These federations from around the world comprise of the best organization in combat sports.
