Gabriel Ruelas was born on July 23rd, 1970 in Yerbabuena, Mexico. He turned pro in 1988 and quickly established himself as one of the best fighters in the world as he won his first 21 fights. On July 31st, 1991, Ruelas faced Aaron Lopez for the NABF Super Featherweight title and came out on top. He went on to defend his NABF title twice and soon found himself fighting for the coveted WBC Super Featherweight Title. His efforts were tremendous but came up short. In 1993 he stepped into the ring with WBC Super Featherweight Title holder Azumah Nelson, and in a very close majority decision he lost. He continued to sharpen and polish his skills and in 1994 opportunity knocked again and this time he would not be denied. In a hard fought 12 rounder he defeated Jesse James Leija and was crowned the new WBC Super Featherweight Champion on July 31st, 1991. He went on to successfully defend his title. With his crowning as a WBC Champion and a total record of 49 -7 (KO24) he made his place as one of boxing’s all time best.
